Old Jaguar site to start making cars again
One of the most historic car-making sites in the UK is set to fire up a production line again.
The Browns Lane site in Coventry made its name as a Jaguar factory, but now looks set to become the UK base for Bowler and possibly Spyker cars as CPP Holdings, signed an exclusive purchase agreement with the current owner.
The company intends to move all of its existing production facilities, spread over five different places in Coventry at the moment, to the site within the next five years. This includes the building of the Bowler all-terrain supercar, after CPP bought the company in January this year.
CPP will also be hoping to add the production of Spyker cars to this as well, although things have all gone a little quiet on that front. The company signed a memorandum of understanding to buy Spyker back in February, but this has lapsed without any deal being completed. CPP remains confident of doing a deal with the current owners Saab, though.
"Bringing together the group's various businesses and facilities within a single, purpose-built location is possibly the most exciting part of the entire plan," said CPP founder and co-owner Brendan O'Toole. "And as our success and growth continues – facilitated by our move to Browns Lane – this will also benefit our wide supply base, the majority of which is in and around Coventry."
It is hoped that redevelopment will start at the 23 acre site by 2012, with planning applications due in at the end of this year.
Jaguar was based at the Browns Lane site from the 1950s through until 2005, when the company moved production to Halewood and Castle Bromwich.
